About the author

Śrīpad Aindra Prabhu was a Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava saint who dedicated his life to chanting God’s Holy Names. Born in Virginia (U.S.) in 1953, he met the followers of the Hare Kṛṣṇa Movement in his early twenties. Deeply touched by the divine sound of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, he was initiated into the movement by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda in 1974. Eight years later, he settled in the holy town of Vṛndāvana (India), where he re-inaugurated the 24-hour kirtan that Śrīla Prabhupāda had originally established. There is great value in sitting in a sacred place and chanting the Holy Names of God for the benefit of all living entities, and Aindra Prabhu had the potency to do so.

Not only was Aindra Prabhu an outstanding spiritual musician; he was also a fired-up preacher. Whenever he was given a chance to speak, his words came from his heart and burned with the fire of love for Kṛṣṇa. In July 2010 Aindra Prabhu suddenly left this world, leaving behind thousands of devotees crying in separation. “He reasons ill who tells that Vaiṣṇava die, when thou are living still in sound! The Vaiṣṇava die to live, and living try to spread the Holy Name around!” As Śrīpad Aindra Prabhu was always eager to chant and to inspire others to chant, we hope to assist him in spreading throughout the world his vāṇī and enthusiasm for harināma-saṅkīrtana.

Dedication

As one would hand over a precious gem, we would like to place this volume in the hands of our dearly missed Aindra Prabhu so that he may offer it at the lotus feet of his beloved spiritual master, Śrīla Prabhupāda

Preface

SripadKosh Publications is a team formed to publish the spoken material mercifully left to this world by His Grace Aindra Prabhu. A kosh is a treasure or treasury, and Aindra Prabhu was sometimes called by the revered title Śrīpad, though he would screw up his nose whenever he heard it.

Aindra Prabhu’s kirtans, writings, lectures, and conversations are rich with profound realizations and a contagious enthusiasm that has touched the hearts of devotees all around the world, and which continue to serve as a source of great inspiration. His presence is badly missed, and his departure left an empty space amidst us that nothing, no one, can fill. Via spiritual sound vibration, however we are able to reconnect with Aindra Prabhu at any time and avail ourselves of his heart-stirring inspirations and instructions.

In the last Puruṣhottama Māsa we observed in the association of Aindra Prabhu, he mentioned that after the publishing of The Heart of Transcendental Book Distribution, another book will come out in due course. It was understood that he was alluding to transcriptions of his spoken offerings. Herewith, we are releasing the first volume of that material: A seminar Aindra Prabhu gave on three consecutive days of Kārtika 2001. We pray to the feet of the Vaishnavas that we may continue this effort of publishing Aindra Prabhu`s spoken words for the pleasure of the devotees and Śrī Śrī Guru and Gaurānga.

Excerpts from the introduction to the 2nd Gem

Aindra Prabhu and the Worship of Śālagrāma

Aindra Prabhu moved to Vṛndāvana in 1986. Around 1992 when his Indian visa expired, he travelled to the Gaṇḍakī River and collected around thirty śālagrāma-śilās.

A few years later while visiting Kathmandu, he came into possession of more śilās. He recounts this visit to Nepal in a 2006 interview:

“When I had to leave India to get a new visa, I went to Nepal and went on śālagrāma saṅkīrtana with my begging cloth— because in many places they sell śālagrāma, which is completely against scriptural injunctions. So I went with my begging cloth and begged śālagrāma from the various shop owners who were selling the śālagrāma, and I collected about eighty-five. So, my first tray filled up from my collection excursion to Nepal. And then afterwards so many just came; year after year They come to me. I haven’t gone to Nepal since.”

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, devotees who knew Aindra Prabhu brought him śālagrāma-śilās on their return from Nepal. In the Padma Purāṇa, it is mentioned that one who gives a gift of śālagrāma receives immense puṇya, pious credit. It is equal to giving the entire fourteen worlds in charity. Aindra Prabhu graciously accepted whatever śilās were brought to him, never considering any apparent external defects. He used to say, “Kṛṣṇa has come to me—how can I refuse Him?”
